The sound of Pretty. Odd. |
Cikk a toronti koncertrl - kpekkel

And on this Sunday night in Toronto, the show went on in all its glory. Urie and Smith, along with touring guitarist Ian Crawford (previously of The Cab) and bassist Dallon Weekes (vocalist of The Brobecks), started off the set with their latest single, “Ready to Go”, a fun dance tune that had the crowd on their feet. They followed it with fan-favourite from debut album A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, “But It’s Better If You Do”, a tune that’s heavy on the drums and has a bridge that’s ideal for a crowd sing-along.
The set-list had a few more old and tried gems from their first album, such as “Lying is the Most Fun”, “The Only Difference”, and of course, “I Write Sins”. Perhaps the most out-of-place, yet entirely perfect number they plucked off of it was “Camisado”, a song that’s commonly associated with ex-founding member, lyricist and guitarist Ryan Ross. While the song’s chorus sounds defeated in theory (“Can’t take the kid from the fight, take the fight from the kid/Sit back, relax, sit back, relapse again”), it’s become somewhat of a feel-good anthem amongst fans over the years.
The band veered away from Pretty. Odd., their second album, and only played a few hits off of it (including “That Green Gentleman” – a song about “little deaths in musical beds” and life going on despite big changes, which seems eerily appropriate now for a band that’s been reborn.) It might have to do with the fact that the record is also often related to Ross, and fits more with his musical style. After the success of Panic!’s first experimental record wore off, Ross grew a bond with 60s rock ‘n roll tunes. Mix that in with his own puzzling poetic tongue as a lyricist, and the end-result was Pretty. Odd., an ambitiously dreamy departure from the band’s electro-dance debut. The album alienated some and pulled in others, but it was ultimately the band’s last musical venture together as one piece.
Now, three years later, Ross and bassist Jon Walker have peacefully emancipated themselves from the band, and Panic! at the Disco are onto their third album, Vices & Virtues, which they focused on promoting during their live show. The album comes from a fresh perspective as it’s the first to be penned by Urie, and while the music is at-times reminiscent of their first album, it’s clear that the band is rediscovering their sound and finding their footing once again on stage with the help of old and new fans chanting along. Melodies like “Let’s Kill Tonight” and “Hurricane” took on a life of their own, sounding raw beyond the confines of immaculate on-record production. A myriad of randomly-placed growls, falsetto notes and screeches from Urie assured the crowd that Panic! are, in fact, still the same band.
