The sound of Pretty. Odd. |
Cikk a Tempe-beli koncertrl - jnius 17. Near the beginning of Panic! At The Disco’s Friday night (6/17) set at Tempe, AZ’s Marquee Theatre, lead singer/multi-instrumentalist Brendon Urie described himself as “lame” — but for the sold-out crowd in attendance, nothing could be further from the truth.
Urie and his cohorts — Panic! drummer Spencer Smith and a touring band consisting of lead guitarist Ian Crawford (formerly of The Cab) and bassist Dallon Weekes (ex-of The Brobecks) — sent the masses of teenage girls into a frenzy with their note-perfect 90-minute set.
“You sing so beautifully, I’m ashamed to call myself a singer,” the well-coiffed frontman told the crowd after a sing-along of “Lying is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off.” “You have golden pipes. What do I call myself? Lame.”
The crowd was fervent from the beginning of the show. To chants of “Panic!” the band took the stage to the hook-laden recent single “Ready to Go (Get Me Out of My Mind),” and quickly followed up with the classic “But It’s Better If You Do” and the new track “The Ballad of Mona Lisa.”
The performance showed a rejuvenated Panic! At The Disco, now officially pared down to a duo after the departure of lead guitarist/co-songwriter Ryan Ross and bassist Jon Walker. Urie’s banter — he spoke about casual sex with strangers, leading up to “Lying is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off,” and even sang a few bars of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On,” changing the lyrics to “Let’s get naked,” before “Hurricane” — was a hit with the teen crowd.
“This has to be our most favorite tour ever,” Urie said with an enthusiasm that proved addictive, giving props to openers Funeral Party and new labelmates fun. Mid-show, Urie invited fun. members Nate Ruess (formerly of Arizona pop band The Format) and Andrew Dost on stage for their collaboration on “C’mon.”
“We had the greatest pleasure of sitting in on a writing session with these guys,” Urie told the sweat-laden ticketholders.
The setlist touched on “Vices and Virtues,” the band’s first album without Ross and Walker. But it was clear the fans wanted to hear songs from the group’s debut, “A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out,” as every song the band performed from that album proved to be a sing-along. A few cuts from the Beatlesque sophomore effort “Pretty. Odd.” even slipped into the show.
While most singers eschew the high notes, Urie riffed like a diva during songs like “The Ballad of Mona Lisa,” “Nine in the Afternoon” and “That Green Gentleman (Things Have Changed).” He took command of the stage, whether playing the keyboards or taking full use of the platform he was given. He showed few signs that he injured his ankle earlier in the tour.
Clearly a crowd favorite, fun., who played immediately before Panic, received a surprising response, with the crowd singing along loudly to each of its songs. With its 30-minute set, Funeral Party dazzled, living up to the critical hype that has followed the band since the Jan. 24 release of its debut full-length “The Golden Age of Knowhere.”
